Staircase design ideas

If you’ve made the decision that you want a new staircase, the next step is to work out the layout and design.

Stairway Joinery feature a team of highly skilled in-house specialists who can work with you to provide an elegant and beautiful Staircase Design that is perfect for your property.

Staircase building control regulations

Stairway Joinery has extensive knowledge of building regulations. We can guide you through the various requirements to ensure your stair is safe and compliant.

When it comes to building control regulations, the most important measurement relates to the total rise (or the vertical distance from floor to floor) as this dictates the number of rises (or verticals) and goings (also known as flat steps or treads). Rises must all be the same height – between 19cm and a maximum of 22cm – and all goings must be a minimum of 22cm.

Other applicable domestic building control regulations include:

  • The maximum allowed staircase pitch is 42 degrees
  • There must be a minimum of 2m head height at all points on and off the staircase
  • While there is no minimum width for domestic stairs, they typically span 86cm. Very narrow secondary staircases are allowed but require approval from building control.

Conforming to building regulations differ from domestic to private regulations. Feel free to speak to a member of our team to get up to speed on the relevant regulations associated with your project.

At Stairway Joinery, we work with an experienced team of in-house experts and craftsmen. Their expertise means you’ll be safe in the knowledge that your bespoke staircase will comply with building control regulations.

Installing a new staircase

It may prove cost-effective to install a new staircase as opposed to renovating your current one. The key factors you need to consider when looking at a staircase installation are:

  • Layout – understanding the space you have to work with
  • Building regulations
  • Style – including the shape and material

With our vast experience in installing New Staircases, Staircase Joinery are the perfect candidates to help install your new bespoke staircase.
